The Edge Effect: Why Nature's Richest Life (and Our Best Ideas) Happen Where Worlds Meet

Walk to the place where a wood gives way to a meadow and stop there a moment. You are standing in the busiest 'real estate' in the whole landscape.
Behind you, the shade and structure of the trees; ahead, the light and flowers of the grassland; and right here, in the seam between them, a riot of life that belongs fully to neither; more species, more activity, more sheer biological excitement than in either habitat on its own.
Ecologists have a name for that seam. They call it an ecotone derived (for my sister) from the Greek oikos, "home," and tonos, "tension" - the tension zone where two worlds meet and blur. And the surplus of life that gathers there has a name too: the edge effect. It's one of the oldest observations in the science, and it turns out to describe not just hedgerows and shorelines but something much larger, including where human beings have their best ideas.
The excitement of the edge, in nature
The insight is usually credited to Aldo Leopold, the father of wildlife management, who noted in his 1933 book Game Management that game animals were always most abundant where habitats met. (The term ecotone itself is older, coined by the ecologist Frederic Clements around 1905.) The reason is intuitive once you see it: an edge offers the resources of both neighbouring worlds at once; a creature can nest in the wood and feed in the meadow, plus a set of conditions found in neither, which some species come to specialise in. These "edge species" flourish in the in-between, and a few live nowhere else at all. Species richness and abundance frequently peak right at the boundary.
This is exactly why permaculture, which we've been exploring throughout this series, makes "use edges and value the marginal" one of its core design principles. Bill Mollison, permaculture's co-founder, loved to show how a pond with a wavy, crenellated shoreline ( more edge crammed into the same space) supports far more life than a plain circular one, because every extra metre of margin is another metre of that productive in-between. Rewilding a garden is, in large part, the art of multiplying edges: winding borders, layered hedges, the fertile margin where water meets land.
But the edge is not a ''free lunch'', and "more edge is always better" is a genuine misconception. Push it too far and edges become fragmentation: chop a forest into scraps and you get all edge and no deep interior, which is a disaster for the species that need the sheltered core. Edges can be productive and harsh, rich and risky. Hold that thought, because it turns out to be just as true of ideas.
The same effect in the world of ideas
Now take that ecological picture and lay it over human creativity, and something clicks. Our most transformative ideas, over and over, come not from the ''deep interior'' of an established, siloed single discipline but from its edges; the places where one field rubs against another and their concepts collide. Given that I spend most of my 'non rewilding' life coaching and consulting with businesses around how to make the deep interior more secure and create real innovation at the edges, I see both, almost daily.
The entrepreneur Frans Johansson gave this its best-known formulation in his 2004 book The Medici Effect. He called the meeting place of disciplines, cultures and industries "the Intersection," and argued that this is where breakthroughs disproportionately happen. He drew the name from Renaissance Florence, where the Medici banking family used their fortune to gather sculptors, scientists, poets, philosophers, architects and financiers into the same city; and the resulting collisions between fields helped ignite the Renaissance itself. Johansson draws a sharp line between directional innovation, the steady incremental improvement you get by pushing deeper into one field, and intersectional innovation, the explosive, surprising kind that comes from combining fields; the difference between a ''slightly better candle'' and ''the light bulb''.
There's solid social science underneath the slogan. The sociologist Ronald Burt showed that people who bridge otherwise-disconnected groups, ie. brokers spanning what he called "structural holes", reliably generate more good ideas, because they can carry a concept that's commonplace in one world into another where it's revolutionary. Mark Granovetter's classic work on "the strength of weak ties" made a related point: genuinely new information tends to arrive not from your close-knit inner circle, who all know what you know, but across the looser, bridging connections to other circles. Innovation, like biodiversity, concentrates at the edge.
Case studies from the human ecotone
The pattern is easiest to feel through stories. Here are three that hold up to scrutiny.
Velcro: biology meets engineering. In 1941 the Swiss engineer George de Mestral came back from a hunting trip in the Alps and, picking burdock burrs out of his dog's coat and his own trousers, did what most of us never do; he got curious. Under a microscope he saw that each burr was covered in thousands of tiny hooks that caught on any loop of fabric or fur. That single observation, carried from the world of botany into the world of fasteners, became the hook-and-loop system he spent nearly a decade perfecting and patented in the 1950s — naming it Velcro, from the French velours (velvet) and crochet (hook). It's the founding example of what we now call biomimicry: an idea that could only exist at the edge between nature and design.
The Nike waffle sole: the kitchen meets the track. Bill Bowerman, a University of Oregon track coach and co-founder of what became Nike, had spent years frustrated by running soles that couldn't grip a new synthetic track without weighing his athletes down. One Sunday morning in 1971, watching his wife Barbara's waffle iron close over the batter, the two unconnected worlds in his head; breakfast and biomechanics suddenly touched. He poured urethane into the waffle iron (ruining it in the process; the melted-shut original now sits at Nike's HQ), and the grid-patterned "waffle sole" that resulted launched the Waffle Trainer and helped build one of the world's great brands. A running-shoe revolution born at the intersection of an athletics problem and a breakfast appliance.
Pixar: ''technology meets storytelling'' by design. Pixar exists as a company at an edge, fusing Silicon Valley computer science with Hollywood storytelling, two cultures that barely spoke the same language. What's instructive is that Steve Jobs didn't leave the collisions to chance. As Walter Isaacson recounts, when Pixar built its headquarters Jobs deliberately placed the café, the mailboxes, the meeting rooms and famously even the main washrooms around a single central atrium; engineering the building so that animators, engineers and executives would keep bumping into one another and striking up the unplanned conversations from which cross-disciplinary ideas are born. He was, in effect, maximising the organisation's edge on purpose: building a crenellated pond shore for people.
The same fingerprint is all over the history of innovation. The Wright brothers were bicycle mechanics, and it was their bicycle-honed intuition about balance and control; not raw engine power that cracked the problem of flight. The gene-editing tool CRISPR came out of microbiologists studying, of all things, the immune systems of bacteria. Bring two deep worlds into contact, and the sparks fly at the join.
''Mind the edge's'' honest lesson
Here is where the ecology pays us back with a warning, and it's the part the breezy "innovate at the intersection!" advice usually skips.
Remember that in nature, edge is powerful but not infinitely good - turn everything into edge and you get fragmentation, all margin and no core, which collapses the very richness you were chasing. The same is true of ideas. Intersectional innovation only works when there are genuine depths to intersect. De Mestral was a trained engineer; Bowerman had spent a lifetime obsessing over the mechanics of running; Pixar's magic needed world-class computer scientists and world-class storytellers. Edge without depth is just dilettantism; a thin scattering of half-understood borrowings that never amounts to anything. The richest innovation happens where deep expertise meets other deep expertise, not where nobody knows anything very well.
And, as with the ecological edge, the human edge is a harsher, riskier place to live. Johansson is candid that intersectional ideas fail more often and face more resistance than safe, directional ones; the boundary-spanner is often the person who doesn't quite fit any camp. Edges are where the excitement is and where the exposure is. That's not a reason to avoid them; it's a reason to protect and resource the people working there.
Cultivating your edges
If you lead a team or build an organisation (and this is where the whole idea comes home for anyone thinking, as this series does, about organisations as ecosystems) the practical lesson is that edge, in nature and in business alike, is something you can deliberately cultivate.
You do it by hiring for range as well as depth, and prizing the odd, boundary-crossing candidate who doesn't slot neatly into a box. You do it by valuing your brokers; the people who span silos and carry ideas between them instead of treating "not staying in your lane" as a fault. You do it by engineering collisions: shared spaces, mixed project teams, cross-industry partnerships, the corporate equivalent of Jobs's atrium, so that people from different depths keep meeting. You do it by protecting a healthy "interior" too; the deep, focused, uninterrupted work that gives the edges something worth combining. And you do it by valuing the marginal: the side project, the strange hire, the unglamorous corner where next year's breakthrough is quietly incubating.
Because the deepest lesson of the edge runs unbroken from the hedgerow to the boardroom. Life gets richest where different worlds meet and mingle, and so do ideas.
Whether you're rewilding a garden or reinventing a business, the move is the same one: find your edges, and make more of them.
